Thai Adjectives

Good news: An adjective is a describing word. The one big thing to remember in Thai: it comes AFTER the noun, and it works like a verb — no "to be" needed.

1What is an adjective?

An adjective (คำคุณศัพท์) describes a noun — its size, colour, or quality.

Pattern: Noun + Adjective → ดอกไม้ + สวย = ดอกไม้สวย (a beautiful flower)

3Adjectives in sentences

Notice the adjective comes AFTER the noun — and there is no "is / are."

4Tips every learner should know

  1. Adjective comes AFTER the noun. รถสีแดง = "red car" (car-red) — opposite of English.
  2. No "to be" before an adjective. บ้านใหญ่ = "the house is big."
  3. "very" = มาก (maak), placed AFTER. สวยมาก = "very beautiful."
  4. "not" = ไม่ (mai), placed BEFORE. ไม่สวย = "not beautiful."

B. Noun + Adjective (Thai order): a big house = บ้านใหญ่; delicious food = อาหารอร่อย; then write your own.

6Make your own sentences

[ Noun ] + [ Adjective ]   (adjective goes AFTER!)   e.g. หมาเล็ก = a small dog
