Thai Prepositions

คำบุพบท · kam bup-pa-bot

Good news: A preposition shows WHERE something is, or the relationship between things (in, on, under, with). It works almost exactly like English.

1What is a preposition?

A preposition (คำบุพบท) shows place or relationship. It goes before a noun.

Pattern: Preposition + Noun → บน + โต๊ะ = บนโต๊ะ (on the table)

4Tips every learner should know

  1. Preposition comes BEFORE the noun. ในบ้าน = "in the house" — same order as English.
  2. อยู่ (yuu) = "is located." It often pairs with place words: อยู่บน = "is on."
  3. กับ (gap) = "with." Also used casually for "and": ฉันกับเพื่อน = "me and my friend."
  4. ที่ (thi) means both "at" and "to (a place)." อยู่ที่บ้าน = "at home"; ไปที่ตลาด = "to the market."
